Using the Talairach atlas with the MNI template

چکیده

Many functional imaging studies match their data to a brain template from the Monteal Neurological Institute (MNI). It is common for such studies to report activation coordinates and estimated Brodmann areas (BAs) in terms of the 1988 atlas of Talairach and Tournoux. This can be problematic, as the brains in the Talairach atlas and MNI template differ significantly in shape and size. This poster describes the differences between the atlas and MNI template, and presents an automated non-linear transform to convert a coordinate for one brain to the corresponding point in the other. Bias between MNI and Talairach coordinates analyzed using the ICBM-152 brain template.

MNI coordinates determined using SPM2 and FSL/FLIRT with the ICBM-152 template were compared to Talairach coordinates determined using a landmark-based Talairach registration method (TAL). Analysis revealed a clear-cut bias in reference frames (origin, orientation) and scaling (brain size). Accordingly, ICBM-152 fitted brains were consistently larger, oriented more nose down, and translated sli...

Using the Talairach atlas with the MN1 template

Most studies in functional imaging present the position of activations in terms of Brodmann cytoarchitectonic areas (BAs). The allocation of activations to BAs often uses the Talairach 1988 atlas. This allocation is beset by uncertainties; for example, outside primary sensory and motor areas, we have little data on the ability of different normalization techniques to overlay cytoarchitectonic a...

Effects of spatial transformation on regional brain volume estimates

Spatial transformation of MR brain images is a standard tool used in automated anatomical parcellation and other quantitative and qualitative methods to assess brain tissue volume, composition, and distribution. Despite widespread use, the quantitative effects of spatial transformation on regional brain volume estimates have been little studied. We report on the effects of transformation on reg...

Comparison of the disparity between Talairach and MNI coordinates in functional neuroimaging data: Validation of the Lancaster transform

Spatial normalization of neuroimaging data is a standard step when assessing group effects. As a result of divergent analysis procedures due to different normalization algorithms or templates, not all published coordinates refer to the same neuroanatomical region. Specifically, the literature is populated with results in the form of MNI or Talairach coordinates, and their disparity can impede t...

The effect of atlas selection on voxel based analyses of DTI data

Introduction: In recent years, voxel based analysis (VBA) studies have demonstrated the potential of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to detect white matter (WM) damage in patients with various neurological or psychiatric disorders. In VBA, all DTI data sets are transformed to an atlas or template, whereafter the diffusion measures of control subjects and patients are evaluated in each voxel. In ...
